This Working Paper examines the role of neighborhood associations as popular vehicles through which residents undertake grassroots initiatives to address common problems and advance the collective good of their community.

The paper:

  • Briefly reviews the research on neighbourhood associations
  • Highlights what some municipalities in southern Ontario are doing to support their local neighbourhood associations
  • Discusses the local landscape in Niagara regarding features and challenges of neighbourhood associations
  • Proposes recommendations on strategies that municipalities in Niagara might take to better support neighbourhood associations and engaged residents.

The paper concludes with recommendations regarding ways that local municipalities in Niagara can support neighbourhood associations.
