More than 1200 individuals age 50+ in Niagara completed the 2022 Empowering Older Adults in Niagara Survey.

More than half (55%) of respondents report that their sense of belonging and feeling engaged in their communities is somewhat or very strong.

When asked about priorities to strengthen Niagara as an age-friendly community which is inclusive of people of all ages, respondents pointed to the top 5 topics of most importance to them:

  • Supports to age at home
  • Health and wellness promotion
  • Increased recreation, leisure and learning opportunities
  • Increased housing options
  • Increased education and information about programs and services for adults 50+

Respondents were asked, “What does an age-friendly community look like to you?”
Themes that emerged include:

  • Opportunities to stay active
  • Inclusive communities
  • Access
  • Connected generations
  • Housing options and supports

The survey was conducted from June 01 to July 15, 2022, by the Age-Friendly NiagaraCouncil (AFNC), in partnership with the Niagara Older Adult Alliance (NOAA). The work of the survey was made possible through funding support from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.

Additional information about survey results will be shared by the AFNC and NOAA in early 2023.
