This report is based on a survey completed by 1,361 Canadian charities and non-profit organizations in February, 2021. It covers staffing, volunteering and the use of government studies and relief programs.
Survey results suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant negative impact on volunteerism across the charitable and non-profit sector in Canada. The majority (64%) of organizations responding to the survey indicated that they have experienced a decrease in the number of volunteers since the beginning of the pandemic, in March, 2020.
Among those experiencing a decrease:
- most have experienced a decrease of more than 30% of their volunteer base; and
- one-quarter (26%) lost more than 75% of their volunteers over the last year.
The challenge has been greater for charities than for foundations.
