In late 2009, the The Niagara Age-Friendly Community Initiative (2010-2013) was supported by funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to promote awareness of World Health Organization (WHO) age-friendly principles, and local action toward making Niagara a more age-friendly community for people of all ages, with a special focus on older adults. In 2010, the Initiative was piloted in the City of Welland. There, a Niagara-wide community engagement and action plan was established, as a basis for encouraging age-friendly action in all twelve of the local municipalities. In late 2011 and early 2012, age-friendly focus group conversations were held across Niagara, with over 100 citizens participating in a total of twelve age-friendly round-table focus groups. Now, in 2013, local age-friendly momentum has advanced. Thoughts and ideas from these conversations helped to advance local age-friendly action in communities throughout the region. The formation of the Niagara Age-Friendly Network has emerged from this initiative.
