The Overdose Prevention and Education Network of Niagara (OPENN) consists of members from prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and enforcement agencies. OPENN members are working together to address increased substance use and raise awareness around the disturbing increase in opioid overdoses in Niagara.  OPENN shares data and working group updates through a regular newsletter.

The April 2022 OPENN Newsletter provides data about Calls for Suspected Opioid Overdoses in the Niagara region, including:

  • From January to March 2022, there were 151 EMS calls. This is approximately 50 calls per month.
  • In 2021, there were 1001 EMS calls. This is approximately 84 calls per month. In August of 2021, there was a record high for EMS calls.
  • There were 630 EMS calls reported in 2020, this is an average of approximately 53 calls per month.
