As the demographics of Niagara are shifting to become more diverse, strengthening Niagara as an inclusive and welcoming community will also strengthen Niagara’s businesses, communities and economies. Research shows that communities that are welcoming and free from discrimination lead to positive health, well-being and sense of belonging for all in the community.

In 2020, Niagara Region and the 12 local municipalities joined the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities, making a commitment to continue improving municipal practices in Niagara to support social inclusion, establish policies to eradicate all forms of racism, and to promote human rights and diversity.

Niagara Regional Council approved its first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Action Plan on September 22, 2022. Implementation of the Niagara Region Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Action Plan 2023-2027 is structured around six focus areas:

  • Inclusive workplace culture, leadership and accountability
  • Increased understanding and humility through learning
  • Diverse workforce reflective of Niagara’s community
  • Programs and services meet the needs of everyone
  • Addressing discrimination
  • Inclusive communication
