Food Banks in Canada are buckling under the strain of demand and there are signs that the food-banking system is reaching its absolute limit. Food Banks Canada’s annual HungerCount report shows that in March, 2024, a total of 2,589 food banks reported 2,059,636 visits to food banks across the country– the highest number in history. This represents a 6 per cent increase compared to 2023, and a 90 per cent increase compared to 2019.
Of those individuals visiting food banks in March, 2024,
- 33 per cent are children (681,450)
- 42 per cent are single – single-person households remain the most common household type accessing food banks in Canada
- 40 per cent are on social assistance or disability-related supports – those receiving provincial social assistance as their main source of income represent 40 per cent of households accessing food banks.
