Capacity building has received growing attention over the past 20 years, concomitant with the profound shift in the voluntary and community sectors’ level of responsibility for accountability, public expectations and available resources.2/3 As a result, not-for-profit organizations are finding it much more challenging to sustain themselves, thus hindering their ability to do work that has impact. Ontario Trillium Foundation decided to address this growing concern by supporting a project that could develop a framework it could use to address organizational capacity building in the field and also inform and support Ontario Trillium Foundation’s Board, senior management and staff, as well as prospective grantees and the voluntary and community sector in Ontario.
