Alcohol-related problems are an often unrecognized challenge in working with older adults.

Even without increasing their alcohol consumption from their younger years, older adults can experience increased effects of alcohol due to age-related physiological changes and alcohol-drug interactions, and/or increased reliance on alcohol as a coping strategy with significant life changes. Stigma can elicit reactions of denial and defensiveness in older clients with traditional (and often confrontational) questions about alcohol use.

The Senior Alcohol Misuse Indicator (SAMI) tool is a screening tool developed at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health that provides a gentle, non-confrontational approach to elicit information to determine if there are concerns related to alcohol use/misuse.
