This presentation will provide an overview of the evidence base for medications employed in a sequential medication treatment algorithm for agitation and aggression in dementia care. It will discuss the purpose, design process and features of this algorithm.

The presentation will highlight:

  • principles such as the implementation of a drug-free “clean-up” period, and the division of drugs into sequential treatments, PRN treatments, and medications for the underlying disorder
  • How the sequential medication treatment algorithm was assembled, taking account not only the strength of evidence for the efficacy in BPSD in treating dementias, but also the side effect profile, complexity of use, efficacy for related conditions and general acceptability to prescribers.
